Ink. Ink. Has Moved to Arabesque

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Shelburne, VT — Ink. Ink., Shelburne’s renowned home of Vermont wedding invitations, fine stationery and everything paper, has moved a few streets away to Arabesque, the Route 7 destination showcasing beautifully distinctive gifts and home décor.

Joining forces in January, these two Shelburne Village mainstays are now found under the same roof, offering bridal clients one customized location for gift and paper needs.  The proprietor of Arabesque, Tracy Stolese, and Ink. Ink. founder Karla Toensing combined their businesses in the Arabesque location at 5597 Shelburne Road, between Harrington’s and Café Shelburne.

“Ink. Ink. at Arabesque” invites brides, fans, and customers new and old to a Welcome Party on Thursday, February 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.  The party will showcase hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting, music and a 20% discount on all purchases.

For ten years, Arabesque has been furnishing bridal parties, guests, and discerning shoppers with luxurious gifts, home décor, and Vermont wedding registry requests.  Ink. Ink. has been offering an extensive selection of fine wedding invitations, birth announcements, party invitations, personal stationery, business correspondence and do-it-yourself paper components in Shelburne for six years.

A new website is in the works to showcase the 16 years of combined experience offered by Ink. Ink. at Arabesque, and for now more information is at www.arabesquevt.com.

Tuesday, February 2nd is Woodchuck Day in Vermont!

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Vermont — For a few years now, folks throughout Vermont have been holding various Woodchuck Day celebrations on February 2nd – the most notable being the WDEV Woodchuck Day Competition and live broadcast at Rusty Parker Memorial Park in Waterbury and Woodchuck Cider events at Vermont ski areas and restaurants.  Groundhogs some places, but Woodchucks in Vermont – where we do what we want!  Because in Vermont, a woodchuck is a hearty Vermonter, a Vermont made hard cider, and an animal sometimes referred to as the groundhog.

So, folks at WDEVWoodchuck Cider, Ski Vermont, and a collection of Vermont ski resorts and Vermont restaurants have joined together to help make Woodchuck Day the official holiday celebrated in Vermont on February 2nd!  We’re hoping additional Vermont media will come on board and help us spread the word to all Vermonters – February 2nd is Woodchuck Day in Vermont!  And, as legend goes, the woodchuck will look for his shadow – and we’re rooting for six more weeks of great skiing and riding in the state that owns winter in its original state!
Woodchuck Day Celebrations will be taking place beginning this weekend and running through next. A complete list of events is available at http://www.woodchuck.com/dev/event/woodchuck-day-events.html.

The VBSR Marketplace

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Buy what you Need, Using what you Have. Save Cash, Trade

Do you believe in a local, Vermont driven sustainable economy and want it to be affordable and manageable? Then you owe it to yourself, your values, and your business to take the time to learn more about the VBSR Marketplace.

For instance, I want to begin building my voice and public speaking business and incorporate my original talents with my current business environment. I also need business cards that are NOT printed at my home office and a Rachel Carter PR notepad to send personalized notes to folks. I never seem to have the cash to pay for these items and I never seem to have the time to start promoting new areas of my business that do not bring in immediate business (not that PR is EVER immediate).

After meeting with Amy Kirschner of Vermont Sustainable Exchange who manages the VBSR Marketplace, I was able to determine how a trade and barter system with other Vermont businesses could really work for me. The VBSR Marketplace is a simple concept – your business uses what it has to purchase what it needs…

It is like a barter system, but much better and much more flexible than that. Your businesses goods and/or services are actually turned into an electronic trade dollar that you can use throughout the network of businesses using the VBSR Marketplace. When someone buys your product, you acquire VBSR Trade Dollars to purchase whatever you need from another business. You make a sale, gain a new customer, conserve your cash, support a fellow Vermont business, and get a product you need all in the same place: The VBSR Marketplace.

To access the Marketplace you muct be either a member if VBSR or WBON – and if you are not a member of either, I would highly suggest joining for a whole other variety of reasons – mainly that everything runs through your social networks and you want them to be strong for maximum marketing potential in this day and age.

National Life Group Donates 2,000 Books to Maryland Elementary School

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Montpelier, Vermont – Employees of National Life Group donated more than 2,000 books to an inner city school in Maryland, helping to fuel the principal’s ambitious dream of bringing 10,000 books into his school.

“I believe reading is the foundation for everything,” says Herman Whaley, principal of the 200-student Capitol Heights Elementary School, located on the Maryland border with Washington, D.C. “If you are not a good reader you are going to struggle.”

The 2,000 books were presented at a school assembly in December at which students, in a format akin to a television game show, answered book-themed questions.

“You have to celebrate reading and books the way we celebrate our athletes,” says Whaley. “You have to be a cheerleader and celebrate it so it becomes contagious, like you are celebrating a sporting event like the Super Bowl.”

The partnership with National Life Group was born in a community group set up by Whaley to brainstorm ideas for nurturing literacy in the area schools.

National Life Group is a family of financial service companies that offer life insurance, annuities, and investment* products and services.  Life Insurance Company of the Southwest (LSW), a member of National Life Group, is a leading provider of 403(b) and 457(b) tax-deferred retirement plans, primarily in the K-12 school marketplace, including Capital Heights Elementary School.

This idea to work with National Life to enhance our school library and classroom libraries came to fruition at our community think tank meeting,” said Whaley. The suggestion came from Rosette Barner-Wiley, a former teacher who is a member of Whaley’s community group and who also sells National Life’s 403(b) retirement products.

She contacted Lewis Smith, who is National Life’s director of 403(b) services. Smith, based in Dallas, and Matt DeSantos, who is National Life’s vice president of marketing and business development and is based in Montpelier, organized book drives at both the Montpelier and Dallas campuses of National Life Group.

Both Smith and DeSantos were on hand when the 2,000 books were delivered to the school.

Smith told the students that books played a critical role in his life and he talked about “the places you can go when you read,” adding, “There are certain things people cannot take away from you when you are growing up – and when you are grown up – and that’s what you have up here (pointing to his head), what you learn, where your imagination takes you, what you have right here in your heart.”

DeSantos told the students that the best TV is in their minds. “It is using your imagination,” he said. On the importance of reading, he added, “It’s about dreams. No one can take it away from you.”

The school has launched a Read 25 program to support each student in reading and discussing at least 25 books every school year.

Whaley has taken the Read 25 program one step further and initiated an additional goal to get 10,000 books into his school.

The 2,000 books were delivered without charge by ABF Freight System, Inc. of Williston, Vt.

“While ABF is a company with a global reach, our people work and live in local communities across the map – communities just like Montpelier and Capital Heights.  For this reason it means so much more to know that we can serve the very communities where we live by supporting worthwhile causes such as this one,” said Russ Aikman, director of marketing and public relations at ABF.
