National Life Group & Charitable Foundation Donate Over $500,000 to Vermont Community Last Year

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Montpelier, VT – The National Life Group Charitable Foundation is deeply woven into the fabric of the Central Vermont community where the state’s oldest and largest LEED certified building resides. The National Life Building houses National Life Group and its corporate giving non-profit organization, the National Life Group Charitable Foundation. In 2010, the two collectively provided financial, infrastructural, and community enhancement support totaling over $500,000.

A major contribution to Central Vermont Medical Center’s now named National Life Cancer Treatment Center completed a radiation center providing Central Vermont residents with new access to local radiation therapy instead of driving to Burlington or Hanover.

“National Life Group’s donation made all the difference in our campaign,” says Judy Tarr, CEO of Central Vermont Medical Center. “The new facility helps support a full service cancer treatment center where eighty to eight-five percent of all cancer patients living in central Vermont can focus on healing.” Over 6,000 radiation sessions were delivered in 2010.

The Vermont Historical Society’s capital campaign was completed with support from the National Life Group Charitable Foundation resulting in saving the Historical Society’s signature bell tower and adding three Vermont heritage galleries for rotating public exhibits.

A sampling of other community programs benefitting from National Life Group Charitable Foundation support include Everybody Wins! (a reading mentor program), Girls Move Mountains, Kellogg Hubbard Library, the Lund Family Center, Mobius (a mentoring program), and the Shelburne Museum.

“We take seriously our commitment to our communities. We do so by supporting a wide range of nonprofits that focus on providing homes, heat, health, education, the arts and human services,” said Mehran Assadi, President and CEO. The $500,000 donated together from the National Life Group Charitable Foundation and National Life Group offered support to some 140 nonprofit organizations in 2010.

National Life employees across all campuses donated over $30,000 in the company’s first ever Community Giving Campaign, which allowed employees to give to their favorite charity using payroll deduction. Employees also took advantage of the company’s generous 40 hour per week volunteer policy by clocking more than 1,500 hours helping local charitable groups.

About the National Life Group Charitable Foundation
The goal of the National Life Group Charitable Foundation is to give back to the community by supporting organizations and initiatives that make a positive difference. The Foundation was created in 2006 and benefits an estimated 100 organizations each fiscal year.  More info at

Woodchuck’s Spring Cider Is Released!

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Middlebury, VT – In Vermont many folks say there are five seasons – spring, summer, fall, winter and maple sugaring season – when temperatures still freeze at night, but the lengthening days are warm and sunny.  Springtime in Vermont is when the maple trees are tapped and the woods are filled with the sound of sap dripping into metal buckets.  Farmers and hobbyists alike spend countless hours crafting Mother Nature’s sweetest gift into “liquid gold.”

At the Woodchuck Cidery located in the western valleys of Vermont, the newest Limited Release Cider is being handcrafted and Woodchuck Hard Cider President and CEO, Bret Williams, is pleased to announce:

“Our 2011 Spring Cider is balanced with the flavors and aroma of fresh maple syrup and brown sugar – a little piece of Vermont tradition captured in every bottle.”

Woodchuck Spring Cider Limited Release shipped mid-January and can be found on shelves across the county throughout February and March.  A location finder can be found online at www.woodchuck.com/locator.  Woodchuck Spring Cider is available in six packs and Variety 12-packs as the season’s “Cidermaker’s Choice.”  Suggested retail is $8.99 per six pack.  Alcohol content is 5% per volume.

Woodchuck Hard Cider incorporated local maple syrup from Vermont producers to craft the Spring Cider Limited Release and provide a delicate sweetness that does not overpower the palate and is true to Woodchuck’s tradition – independent to the core.  Woodchuck Spring Cider is naturally gluten free, as are all Woodchuck Hard Ciders.

About Woodchuck Hard Cider
Woodchuck Hard Cider is a hard cider handcrafted with apples.  First crafted in Proctorsville, Vermont in 1991, Woodchuck Hard Cider now operates in a state-of-the-art cidery in Middlebury, Vermont.  The popular Woodchuck Amber is the original style produced and still today the recipe remains the same. That’s not to say some things haven’t changed over the years, Woodchuck now has an extended line up of styles and has grown distribution from one country store in VT to across the United States. Greg Failing, the original creator of the recipe and the cider maker to this day, combines both art and science with his own personal touch in crafting this award winning cider. The Woodchuck family ensures exceptional quality and premium taste are met in every small batch before any bottle or keg leaves our back door. A naturally gluten-free beverage, Woodchuck Hard Cider is also a favorite in food pairings and a key ingredient in a variety of recipes.  More information is available at

Art in the Snow – Brandon, Vermont’s Arts & Wine Festival – February 26 & 27

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Brandon, a classic Vermont village with over 240 houses on the National Historic Register, is host to a vibrant art community whose high regard has gained the town the reputation as “the art and soul of Vermont.”  Every winter, her many artists open their studio doors and hundreds of visitors flock to witness the creative process in action.  But the definition of creative arts encompasses more than the graphic arts — Brandon has much more to offer and this year’s event takes Art in the Snow to a much higher level!  The festival will take place on February 26 and 27, 2011 at venues throughout the town.

The town-wide celebration includes open studios as well as classes and demonstrations in the visual arts and the culinary arts.  Take a painting class with famed folk artist Warren Kimble or a pizza-making lesson with chef Robert of the much celebrated restaurant, Café Provence.  Other workshops include earring making, cooking a “localvore” meal, and children’s painting.  Many more open studios throughout town and in Brandon’s delightful shops and restaurants present a myriad of specials and offerings.

The most exciting new addition to this year’s Art in the Snow is The Wine Trail, brought to Brandon by the Vermont Grape and Wine Council where five wineries are presenting a host of tastings to delight the oenophile.  There will be a Saturday afternoon open house reception at the brand-new Warren Kimble Gallery and a cabin-fever dance at the Brandon Inn in the evening featuring the local band, The Avant-Garde Dogs.  For those wishing to make a weekend of it, cozy rooms in romantic Vermont country inns and charming B&Bs beckon.

The Art in the Snow website, www.artinthesnow.com, has full details as well as an opportunity to pre-register for classes online – registration will be possible the day of the events only if the classes haven’t filled up.  Openings are limited.  Art in the Snow is a not-to-be-missed opportunity, a chance to share in all that makes Brandon a special town that beguiles the young and old alike.  Art in the Snow is a partnership event between the Brandon Artists Guild and the Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce.  For more information, please email info@brandon.org or call 802-247-6401.
